Chicago - Day 5

The working week is over and the job that I came out here to do is done. In the process I've talked to a couple of dozen people who I believe to be ignorant of my past and not had any problems. I've stood at the front of rooms and given talks on subjects I know quite a bit about with almost no notes, answered questions from the floor, assisted others in fixing problems, offered advice when asked, critiqued work as requested, been asked to review job descriptions that I'm not sure I'd pass and to top it off people have wondered if I could spend 6 months out here on what is termed 'an internal sabbatical'.
And do you know what? I've loved every single minute of it. I've been outside of my comfort zone, without much of a safety net and it has been one of the best experiences of my life. Would I come back if management figure out how to do it without stepping on too many toes? Most probably - but I'd hate to leave the job I'm currently doing unfinished.
We shall see how that plays out when I get back to the office in a week as the department head I've been a guest of is in London for a few days next week so no doubt the subject will come up. For now though I can put work and office politics to one side and go play the English tourist abroad for a week.
